Of the 2,268 Bugs produced
from 1970 to 1975 it is thought that less than 999 Bugs remain
worldwide. The actual figure is unknown but it’s probably
a lot less than that.
It’s difficult to come to a definitive figure because there
are too many unknowns. Unfortunately what is known is just as
cryptic!
Nonetheless a good starting point is The Bug Club who have
kept detailed records of many of the surviving Bugs which were
manufactured by Reliant, although it does rely on the membership
to update these records and unfortunately some of the data
is outdated and/or incomplete.
What is known though, is that there are around 250 members
worldwide within The Bug Club, with the vast majority of those
members being Bug owners. It’s also known that a small
number of members own one or more Bugs, but that number probably
equals the number of enthusiasts within the club who do not
own a Bug, so its probably fair to say that there are around
250 Bugs within the club.
Now its also known that not every Bug owner is a member of
The Bug Club, so in the first instance we could double that
figure of non members to 250, making a total of 500 Bugs,
but this is probably a bit of an exaggeration, its likely
that many owners will seek out a club eventually for their
make of car. This has been demonstrated with most car clubs
worldwide!
Then of course there are all those Bugs sitting in lockups
and in Barns lying around undiscovered, but lets face it, this
is not going to be hundreds and hundreds!
However if we keep it to 250, then this makes 750 in total.
This is of course is only a guess-estimate but its quite clearly
a lot less than the 999 first predicted in the introduction.
On the plus side of those 750 Bugs, they do tend to change
hands quite rapidly, with many Bugs having double figures recorded
in their V5’s.
So don’t give up hope just yet……….
