It’s difficult to find a common denominator here, although
some theories hold more water than others.
It is known that 4
wheel car ownership is no longer referred to in decades; gone
are the 1950’s and 60’s where your father might have
owned a particular car for most of his life. Today the average
ownership of any model is probably between 5 and 10 years. With
the number of cars on the road increasing year on year, two or
three car ownership is now practically the norm.
However, 3 wheeler ownership is on the decline. There is no longer
a large manufacturer of 3 wheelers left in the UK. Reliant still
exists but they now import rather than make cars. This came about
because the target audience has aged and no longer drive 3 wheelers
as a first choice, in essence the market has dried up.
Bugs are therefore purchased as a hobby car.
The average ownership of a Bug was recently worked out as being
approximately
9 months to a year, a lot less than the average normal car ownership.
Perhaps Bugs are not what the owner expected. Fun they may be, but they are not
quiet, draft-free, air-conditioned, smooth riding four wheelers.
They are a two-seater three-wheeler. Simple as that.
