Back in the 70’s and 80’s Bugs were readily available
and could be found in the Classified section of the local newspapers.
By the 90’s they were becoming restricted to the classic
car section, but at least they were still around. Bugs of course
were often found in The Bug Club magazine Buggin’ where
members tended to offer them at reasonable prices to other members.
However, all this changed after the Millennium and the launch
of ebay! Today the vast majority of Bugs are now sold to the
highest bidder, often irrespective of condition or worth. Unfortunately,
this often out prices the little guy and only those with the
money will win the bid, therefore it has become the preferred
method of selling because people will often pay well over the
odds to get what they want. Further bad news is that Bugs, which
are not on the road but have the potential to be salvageable,
are occasionally dismantled and sold off in parts. Although this
action may result in a couple of other peoples Bugs being completed,
it reduces the number of available Bugs and is condoned by the
Bugging community.
The 750 Bugs then becomes 749 and so on. Having said that, the
good news is that you can expect to see between five and ten
Bugs on offer over a couple of months, and
some are restored to a very high standard. So there always a
chance the right Bug for you will come along within a few months
of watching.
The other place where they, very occasionally, turn up is
in the ‘for sale’ part of the Bondbug.com forum.
Here the Bugs are offered to other enthusiasts without bidding
against someone, although they do go snapped up quite quickly,.
However, if they don’t sell straight away, it’s
because the majority of forum members already have Bugs and
it requires those seeking Bugs to check that part of the forum.
As Bugs only occasionally get offered in the forum, the ‘for
sale’ section gets overlooked because the potential buyer
doesn’t think its worth checking because the vast majority
of previous searches are fruitless.
But its still worth checking………..
